OSPAR - Shellfish and Sediment

In support of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the Dept. of Housing, Planning and Local Government (DHPLG), the Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Marine (DAFM), and the Marine Institute (MI), the Chemistry section of the MI analyses shellfish and sediment samples collected at pre-defined sampling stations around the Irish coastline each year, and submits the resulting data to the OSPAR Commission via the ICES database. The OSPAR Commission collects data on the marine environment in order to carry out assessment of environmental conditions with a view to agreeing measures to address problem pollutants. Under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Commission has a responsibility for achieving effective and coherent regional cooperation with respect to the protection of the marine environment in the North-East Atlantic including areas of the high seas.
