Greenhouse gas emission projections are a valuable analytical tool to assess Ireland’s progress towards achieving its 2020emission reduction targets set down under the EU Effort Sharing Decision (Decision 406/2009/EC). The EPA develops national emission projections on an annual basis, in collaboration with relevant State and other bodies. This collaboration ensures consistency with economic forecasts and with projected activity in sectors including energy, agriculture, and industry. The EPA publishes greenhouse gas emission projections on an annual basis and submits emission projections to the European Commission as required under the Monitoring Mechanism Regulation (Regulation (EU) 525/2013). For example, energy forecasts are provided by Ireland’s Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. Energy forecasts are developed using macroeconomic assumptions provided by the Economic and Social Research Institute. Forecasted activity data for the agriculture sector (animal numbers, crop areas and fertiliser use) are provided by Teagasc. Following receipt of this data, the EPA carries out further data processing and calculations (e.g. use of emission factors) to determine the greenhouse gas emission projection estimates. The data processing involves QA/QC checks. The EPA must be notified if any errors or emissions are found. It is not permitted to distribute electronic copies of this data to any other party without the prior consent of the data holders (Environmental Protection Agency). The data source must be appropriately acknowledged.
