Kingfisher Survey 2010

This GIS dataset holds records from the Kingfisher Survey 2010 (report titled: Assessment of the distribution and abundance of Kingfisher Alcedo atthis and other riparian birds on six SAC river systems in Ireland). The survey was commissioned by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and carried out by BirdWatch Ireland.

The following six river complexes which were known to support Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) were surveyed: River Boyne and River Blackwater, Munster Blackwater, River Moy, River Clare, River Barrow and River Nore. Data for two more systems (Gill and Ilen) were supplied by NPWS Conservation Rangers. A total of 25 waterways bird species were recorded during the survey.

The principal objective of this survey was to quantify the distribution and densities of Kingfisher and other waterways birds throughout the six SAC river systems, and to inform the Special Protection Area designation process, with regards to Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). The Kingfisher is listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive.

Due to the sensitivity of this data the records are shown at 1km square resolution.

Statement

During the Kingfisher survey, a maximum length of 941 km divided into 2,004 sections was covered across the eight river systems, using both boat and walked transect methodologies. Three visits were made to each system in spring 2010, and all waterways bird species seen or heard were recorded, as were the locations of any Kingfisher nest holes deemed active, inactive or unknown.

For a detailed description of the survey methodology please refer to the survey report.

Survey records were supplied to NPWS in an MS Excel file containing six worksheets. In addition to locations of kingfisher nest sites, start and end points of surveyed river sections were given. These start and end points were combined with a river vector file to calculate mid points for each surveyed section. These mid points were overlaid with a 1km Irish Grid vector file to derive records for any sightings.

Records were then uploaded into the NPWS Species database. Spot-checks of record locations against OSI Discovery series mapping were carried out prior to the upload, and Recorder 6 validation rules applied. The records were then exported from the Species database as a polygon shapefile showing squares, with the side lengths of the squares corresponding to the precision in which the records were provided.
