National Otter Survey of Ireland 1980-1981
This GIS dataset holds positive records from the National Otter Survey of Ireland 1980/1981 by the Vincent Wildlife Trust. The survey was the first systematic study of otters and their wetland and coastal habitats to be undertaken throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It took place between January 1980 and March 1981. The survey provided a base-line against which further studies could be compared and thus assist monitoring of populations and distribution.

Alternate 50km Irish Grid squares were surveyed to obtain a representative coverage of all major regions and habitat types throughout Ireland in the limited time available. The basic unit area used during the survey was the 10km Irish Grid square, and a representative sample of wetland and coastal habitat types present in each 10km square was chosen whenever possible. It was generally possible to locate six sites within each whole 10km square.
Survey points were frequently located at bridges, fords, piers etc., which provided good access. Spraints and tracks were accepted as proof of otters’ presence. Of the 2,373 sites surveyed, 2,177 were found to have signs of otters, giving an overall result of 91,7% positive. Observations of non-targeted species (mainly fish species and American mink) were also recorded and are included in this dataset.
The survey records were at a later stage supplied to NPWS in MS Access .mdb format, and records for the Republic of Ireland were uploaded into the NPWS Species database. Spot-checks of record locations against discovery series mapping were carried out prior to the upload, and Recorder 6 validation rules applied. The records were then exported from the Species database as a polygon shapefile showing squares, with the side lengths of the squares corresponding to the precision in which the records were provided.
