The High Status Objective/Blue Dot waterbodies are those that have a high ecological status objective under the Water Framework Directive and include rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal waterbodies. High status objectives were set for waterbodies during Water Framework Directive characterisation for the 2nd cycle and were published in Irelands River Basin Management Plan 2018-2021 on 17th April 2018. Waterbodies were assigned a high status objective where they were consistently achieving high ecological status in the past (irrespective of whether or not they are currently achieving high status), or where they were within one of eight particularly important freshwater pearl mussel catchments. Additional waterbodies can be upgraded to High Status Objective/Blue Dot if these begin to consistently achieve high ecological status and 19 waterbodies were added for the 3rd River Basin Management cycle. When achieving their status objectives the High Status Objective/Blue Dot waterbodies contain much of our best aquatic habitat, protect many iconic and vulnerable species and provide a vital source of sensitive aquatic taxa which can recolonise other waterbodies.
