Aerial thermal imaging survey for Harbour seals, 2017 to 2018

A helicopter survey carried out by the Sea Mammal Research Unit of the University of St Andrews to obtain abundance and distribution data on Harbour Seals and Grey Seals in Ireland during the Harbour Seal moult period (Aug-Sep), using thermal imaging and high resolution digital photography.

Purpose

1. Conduct an aerial survey of all coastal areas in Ireland during the Harbour Seal moult period (Aug-Sep), using a thermal imaging video camera to detect groups of seals ashore and a high resolution photo camera to record all groups of seals encountered.

2. Data analysis to provide species identification, count and spatial data using the imagery and location data collected during the survey.

3. Produce a comprehensive report describing the survey, findings, tables and maps presenting seal abundance and distribution data.

4. Provide all data collected during the survey in digital format (video files and photographs), as well as the final seal count and location data (Excel spreadsheet and GIS shapefile).

Statement

Species identification and counts were derived from high resolution still photographs taken of all seals encountered. The locations of groups of seals were derived from comparing satellite imagery with still photos (containing GPS coordinates) and video footage recorded during each sighting, and placed on a digital GIS map containing mean high water and mean low water shapefiles, as well as satellite imagery.

The survey covered the entire Irish coastline with the following exceptions:

Inishbiggle and Annagh Island off the east side of Achill Island, Co. Mayo, were not surveyed. During the previous national survey in 2011&2012, 39 harbour seals and 3 grey seals were counted on these islands.
