WFD Overall River Water Risk Score (2008)
This is a dataset of overall risk status results for River waterbodies (2008). The risk status was calculated as part of the Article 5 characterisation and risk assessment report carried out on all waterbodies. It identifies those at risk of failing the objectives of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (Water Policy Regulations 2003 (SI no. 722/2003)).

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) Article 5 characterisation process requires an analysis of the pressures and impacts that human activities exert on Irish waters to be undertaken. The purpose of the analysis was to identify surface water bodies and groundwater bodies at risk of failing the objectives of the directive due to the effect of human activities. A number of tests were undertaken to determine whether the waterbody is going to achieve good status. These tests were carried out by RPS. Each waterbody was assigned a risk score for each test completed. For Ireland it was considered that use of four risk categories/scores (at significant risk (1a), probably at significant risk (1b), probably not at significant risk (2a) and not at significant risk (2b)) improved the prioritisation of follow-up actions and recognised the uncertainties associated with the analysis and/or datasets. If a waterbody was at risk for only one test the overall characterisation for that river was ‘At Risk’. Each record has the WFD European Code for the waterbody it refers to and a time stamp referring to the date that the risk status was compiled.
