Margaritifera Sensitive Areas Map
This project contains NPWS GIS files relevant to the distribution of Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) and Nore Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera durrovensis) in Ireland. Both species are listed in Annex II and Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive.
The information is stored in an ESRI Shapefile showing sensitive areas, based on sub-catchments with present or historical occurrences of Margaritifera.
The current revision of this dataset was published 10/08/17.

- Purpose
-
The purpose of this datasets is to delineate the catchments of extant and presumed extant mussel populations, in the support of the development of national and site-specific conservation objectives, sub-basin management plans for SAC populations, examinations and reviews of discharge authorisations and other conservation measures, as well as to assist in the processes of SEA, EIA and AA of plans, programmes and projects and reporting under the Habitats and Water Framework Directives.

This polygon file contains river catchments in which live pearl mussels have been recorded. The catchment limits are based on sub-basin boundaries from the EPA Water Framework Directive geodatabase (filename: EPA_WFD_v3.mdb), and catchments are divided up into three categories:
1. Catchments of SAC populations listed in S.I. 296 of 2009
2. Catchments of other extant populations
3. Catchments with previous records of Margaritifera, but current status unknown
Most of the catchment boundaries used in this file follow EPA river sub-basin boundaries and were derived by first selecting sub-basins in which Margaritifera records or river stretches of Margaritifera habitat are located. In a second step any sub-basin within a river basin located upstream from a selected sub-basin was selected to include all areas with potential impacts on Margaritifera populations.
For some areas that weren't covered by any river sub-basin or where the sub-basin file seemed wrong when compared to river and contour layers, the river basin boundaries were used to delineate catchments.
Some sub-basins in the EPA geodatabase, mainly along some of the main channels, include vast stretches of river. In cases in which these sub-basins extend long distances downstream from any Margaritifera records, the sub-basins were cut around the lowest records. The resulting file contains 108 catchments, divided up into the three categories mentioned in the 'Description / Abstract' field above, and covering around one third of the country's land surface.
