Rivers Ecology Monitoring Results

National surveys of Irish rivers have taken place on a continuous basis since 1971, when 2,900 km of river channel was surveyed. The National Rivers Monitoring Programme was replaced by the Water Framework Monitoring Programme from 22 December 2006. As part of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) Monitoring Programme approximately one third of our major rivers and their more important tributaries are surveyed and assessed each year by EPA ecologists. A complete survey cycle is completed every three years. The sites are scored on a five point system developed by the EPA called the Biological Q rating system.

Statement

The biological quality of Irelands rivers are surveyed by EPA Scientists every 3 years on a rolling monitoring program. Biological quality is rated on a five point scale known as the Q Value system. A value of 1 is poor, and a value of 5 is excellent. EPA scientists log their Q Value results and validate them every year. The QRecords table is a summary of the QValue results logged for each station and the year that the station was surveyed. Not all stations have results for each 3 year cycle. The results are added to the QRecords table daily, once the EPA Scientist validates them. Results appear on the EPA Maps (Envision) viewer 2 days after they are validated by EPA Biologists. The QRecords table on the EPA data download page is update less frequently.
